FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- It's that time of year again. While many University of Saint Francis students hit the books and took notes on Monday morning, employers say they could use many more.
A recent healthcare workforce study calls it a 'strong nursing shortage' that's sweeping the nation and certainly doesn't miss the Hoosier state.
USF Health Sciences Dean, Dr. Mindy Yoder says, "Currently, projected through 2020, there's about a one million position nursing shortage project throughout the United States."
Dr. Yoder highlights the university's state-of-the-art simulation lab that's known to attract many students into its nursing program. But says the shortage isn't necessarily triggered by a lack of interested students.
"The baby boomers are nearing retiring, or thinking about that, so that leaves a void," she says.
To combat the shortage, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services gave the university a $700,000 federal grant to be used to provide scholarships to those interested in pursuing a career within the field.
