The quality of the University of Texas Medical Branch's (UTMB) School of Nursing academics is reflected in the number of nationally ranked programs and nationally recognized scholars at our school. We offer undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree tracks, designed to meet the unique needs of each nursing professional. Our graduates are skilled in providing patient-centered care and are developed to become leaders in healthcare. Our alumni are leading nursing in Texas and beyond.

The UTMB School of Nursing, established in 1890 as the John Sealy Hospital Training School of Nurses, was the first school of nursing in the Southwest. UTMB SON  also was the first school to offer MSN programs in Texas. UTMB has continued throughout its history to lead innovation in nursing education.

The Baccalaureate Nursing Program offers two tracks: the Traditional 16 month BSN track and the eight month RN-BSN track.

The Master's Nursing Program encourages students striving for excellence in clinical practice, education, and research. We offer  flexibility through our online programs,  excellent clinical resources,  and a highly experienced faculty.

MSN programs offiered include:

  • Adult/Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult/Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Clinical Nurse Leader
  • Executive Nurse Leader
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
  • Nurse Educator (including Post BSN/MSN Certificate)

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) online post-masters program prepares nurse practitioners with strong clinical competencies and the skills in science, leadership, and inquiry necessary to transform health care. Students eligible for admission into the program wil have an MSN prepared nurse practitioner area of specialization. The 42 semester credit hour program is taught online, part-time, and requires only one trip to campus each semester for 2-3 days.

The Nursing PhD Program is completely online using synchronous and asynchronous delivery, with only one required on-campus visit (5 days) each year. We have two entry levels: BSN to PhD and MSN to PhD. SON currently offers two tracts in the BSN to PhD level: Education and Leadership.
